Josefowitz for BART Board 2014

Smart, savvy, grassroots campaign takes down a corrupt political dynasty

The Challenge

In 2014, 50+1 served as general consultant for first-time candidate Nick Josefowitz in an uphill battle against a well- known Republican incumbent who held the seat for 24 years. Understanding the demographics of the district and that the political establishment largely favored the incumbent, we had to formulate a plan that had both an effective communications strategy and a strong field operation.

The Solution

Understanding the demographics of the district and that the political establishment largely favored the incumbent, we had to formulate a plan that had both an effective communications strategy and a strong field operation.

We knew that Josefowitz had to run a tight, strategic campaign that focused on finding the right message that would resonate with voters and communicating with voters in traditional and non-traditional ways.

Strategic Messaging: “CLEAN UP BART”

We went with a simple slogan:
“Clean up BART” and distributed 60,000 sponges to voters with this message. We ran a targeted Facebook ad campaign, and put a significant amount of money toward cultural media outlets. We ran a robust paid canvass program and used a new data management system to log and track field activity in real time.

After knocking on over 85,000 doors and executing a targeted messaging strategy, Josefowitz surprised the pundits and won handily by 9.5 points.
